Tanzania’s Wildlife Management Authority has completed construction of the Engaresero Airstrip in Ngorongoro District, Arusha Region, opening a more direct connection to Lake Natron—one of northern Tanzania’s most remote and remarkable natural destinations and a vital breeding site for lesser flamingos.
Completed in June 2026, the airstrip features a 1.2-kilometre runway measuring 23 metres wide. Following completion, the facility received certification from the Tanzania Airports Authority after meeting the required aviation safety standards.
For travellers, this development means reaching Lake Natron can become more seamless, with improved air connectivity linking the destination to the wider Arusha and Ngorongoro tourism circuit. It brings greater accessibility to a landscape defined by dramatic escarpments, volcanic terrain, and the striking presence of thousands of lesser flamingos.
Beyond convenience, Engaresero reflects a broader investment in Tanzania’s northern safari corridor. As air access expands, so does the opportunity to discover destinations beyond the region’s traditional gateways—encouraging deeper exploration, greater tourism diversification, and journeys that move at a more meaningful pace.
For those seeking a different side of Tanzania, Engaresero offers a new arrival point—and Lake Natron, a new perspective on the wild.
